Indiana Licensing — What You Need to Know

Key Indiana-specific details many candidates miss. Verified against primary state sources.

Important

Indiana prelicensing certificates expire in just 6 months

Indiana has one of the shortest prelicensing certificate validity windows in the country — only 6 months from completion. If you do not pass your Pearson VUE exam within that window, the certificate expires and you must retake the entire prelicensing course. Plan to schedule your exam within weeks of finishing coursework, not months.

Planning Note

Indiana uses Pearson VUE — no fingerprinting required

Indiana insurance exams are administered by Pearson VUE at testing centers across the state. Indiana does not require fingerprinting for resident producer licensing, simplifying the timeline considerably. Confirm current exam fee, question count, and time limit in the Pearson VUE Indiana candidate handbook before scheduling.

Planning Note

Indiana's late-renewal penalty stacks to $160 to reinstate

If you miss your Indiana renewal, the reinstatement penalty is $120 — three times the $40 renewal fee — for a total of $160 to bring your license current within 12 months. Past 12 months you must relicense from scratch. CE carry-forward is not permitted; you must complete a fresh 24 CE hours (3 ethics) every two years on the last day of your birth month.
