Texas Fingerprinting for Insurance: Where to Go and What to Expect
Texas Fingerprinting for Insurance Agents Explained. Practical guide to texas insurance license fingerprinting for Texas agents. Get the rules,...

If you're working toward your Texas insurance license, fingerprinting is a required step you can't skip. It's straightforward — but knowing what to expect ahead of time makes the whole thing faster and stress-free.
Why Texas Requires Fingerprinting
The Texas Department of Insurance requires fingerprinting as part of a criminal background check for all license applicants. Your prints are submitted through both the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI to check for any criminal history at the state and federal level.
This isn't unique to Texas — most states require it. TDI uses the results to ensure that people entering the insurance industry meet the character and fitness standards required to work with the public.
Where to Get Fingerprinted
Texas uses IdentoGO (operated by IDEMIA) as its authorized fingerprinting provider for TDI applicants. You cannot just walk into any fingerprinting location — it must be through an IdentoGO-approved site.
To schedule your appointment:
Go to identogo.com
Enter the TDI service code for insurance applicants
Select a location near you
Choose your appointment time
IdentoGO has locations throughout Texas — Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and most major metro areas have multiple options. Appointments are typically available within 1 to 3 business days.
What to Bring
Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport)
Your IdentoGO registration confirmation
Payment if not already paid online (fees are generally around $38 to $40)
The appointment itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Your fingerprints are taken digitally — no ink involved. Results are submitted electronically to TDI.
When Should You Get Fingerprinted?
You don't have to wait until after you pass your exam. Many applicants schedule their fingerprinting appointment while they're still studying or shortly after passing, so results are already in the system by the time they submit their license application.
This is the smartest approach — it removes one of the most common causes of application delays.
What If Something Shows Up on Your Background Check?
If your background check reveals a criminal history, TDI will review it as part of your application. Not every record results in a denial — TDI evaluates the nature of the offense, how long ago it occurred, and other factors.
If you have concerns about your background before you invest time in the process, you can request a pre-application determination from TDI. They'll give you an informal assessment of how your history might affect your application.
5 Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use a different fingerprinting service? No. TDI only accepts results submitted through IdentoGO. Using another service won't satisfy the requirement.
- How long does it take for TDI to receive my fingerprint results? Usually 24 to 48 hours after your appointment. Processing times can occasionally run longer during high-volume periods.
- Do I need to get fingerprinted every time I renew my license? No. Fingerprinting is a one-time requirement for initial licensure in Texas.
- What if I already have a fingerprint on file from another Texas state agency? TDI requires its own fingerprint submission through IdentoGO specifically for insurance licensing. A prior submission for another agency doesn't carry over.
- What if my fingerprints are rejected due to print quality? IdentoGO will let you know and reschedule a new appointment at no extra charge if the rejection is due to quality issues at the time of capture.
