Knowing what you're walking into on exam day removes a lot of unnecessary anxiety. The Texas insurance exam has a specific format — and understanding it helps you pace yourself, manage your time, and show up prepared.
Here's exactly what to expect.
Who Administers the Exam?
The Texas Department of Insurance contracts with Pearson VUE to administer all insurance licensing exams in Texas. You'll take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center. Appointments can be scheduled online at pearsonvue.com.
Exam Breakdown by License Type
Most candidates sit for the combined Life & Health exam to earn the 2-15 license, which allows you to sell both lines of coverage.
What Types of Questions Are on the Exam?
All questions are multiple choice with four answer options. There's no partial credit — each question is either right or wrong. The exam pulls from two main content areas:
General insurance knowledge — concepts, policy types, underwriting, claims
Texas state law — TDI regulations, agent duties, replacement rules, consumer protections
Roughly 20 to 25% of the exam focuses on Texas-specific content. This is the section where state-specific study materials make a real difference.
What to Expect on Exam Day
Arrive at the testing center 15 minutes early
Bring two forms of ID, one of which must be a government-issued photo ID
No phones, notes, or study materials are allowed in the testing room
You'll be given scratch paper and a pencil by the testing center
Results are displayed immediately after you finish
How Is the Score Calculated?
Your score is based only on scored questions — some exams include unscored pilot questions that don't count toward your result, though you won't be able to tell which ones they are. Answer every question as if it counts, because most of them do.
A score of 70% or higher is a pass. TDI does not publish exact cutoff scores beyond that percentage.
5 Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I skip questions and come back to them? Yes. Pearson VUE's testing platform allows you to flag questions and return to them before submitting. Use this to your advantage — answer what you know first, then revisit the harder ones.
- What happens if I run out of time? The exam will auto-submit when time expires. Unanswered questions are counted as incorrect, so always make your best guess rather than leaving anything blank.
- Do I get my score right away? Yes. Your pass or fail result appears on screen immediately after you complete the exam. A score report is also printed and given to you at the testing center.
- Is the exam the same every time? The questions are drawn from a large question bank, so no two exams are identical. The topics covered remain consistent, but the specific questions will vary.
- Can I use a calculator during the exam? The testing center may provide a basic on-screen calculator. No personal calculators are allowed. The math on the exam is straightforward — nothing that requires complex calculations.
