Kentucky Insurance Exam: Complete 2025 Guide to Passing the KDOI Licensing Exam
Kentucky Insurance Exam: 2025 Guide to Passing. Practical guide to Kentucky insurance license exam for Kentucky agents. Get the rules, timelines, and...

The Kentucky insurance licensing exam is unlike those in most other states because Kentucky administers it entirely in-house. There is no Pearson VUE, PSI, or Prometric involvement in the producer exam — the Kentucky Department of Insurance (KDOI) runs every aspect, from scheduling through scoring. That self-contained structure means you interact exclusively with the KDOI for your exam experience, and understanding exactly how it works is essential to passing on your first attempt.
Who Administers the Kentucky Insurance Exam?
The KDOI itself administers all insurance producer licensing examinations through its own testing network. You schedule your exam through your KY eServices account at insurance.ky.gov after the KDOI processes your application. Testing sites are located throughout the state at Frankfort, Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Florence, Ashland, Elizabethtown, Henderson, London, Madisonville, and Maysville. All exams are in-person — there is no remote or online proctored exam option in Kentucky.
Exam Fees
The initial exam fee is $50 and is incorporated into the licensing process after your NIPR application is processed. If you fail and need to retake the exam, each retake costs $50. You file an Exam Retake Form with the KDOI and may reschedule beginning on the next business day following a failed attempt. You are limited to three attempts within a 120-day window. If you fail three times within 120 days, you must restart the licensing process, including completing new prelicensing education before reapplying.
Passing Score
The passing score for all Kentucky insurance licensing examinations is 70%. All exams are computerized and scored immediately upon completion. You receive your result at the testing site before leaving.
Exam Format and Content
Each line of authority has its own examination covering two broad categories: general insurance knowledge (national content covering product principles, policy provisions, and basic insurance law) and Kentucky-specific content (state laws, regulations, ethics, and KDOI requirements). Unlike Missouri, which administers national and state content as two completely separate scored exams requiring 70% on each independently, Kentucky administers an integrated examination for each line with a single overall score.
The exam questions for each line cover the topics KDOI considers essential knowledge for agents practicing in Kentucky. For Life and Annuity exams, expect questions on policy types, beneficiary designations, tax treatment of life insurance, annuity structures, and Kentucky-specific producer regulations. For Property & Casualty exams, expect questions on homeowners policies, commercial coverage, auto insurance basics, and Kentucky's specific auto insurance laws including the choice no-fault system under KRS 304.39 and the state's 25/50/25 minimum coverage requirements.
Consultant examinations are structured differently — each is 150 questions requiring 190 minutes to complete. Contact the KDOI at (502) 564-6004 for consultant exam scheduling, as these are arranged separately.
Test Day Procedures
Arrive at your testing site at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time. Bring a government-issued photo ID — no exceptions. If you fail to arrive by your scheduled time, you may forfeit your placement at the site depending on availability. If you cancel your appointment without providing at least 24 hours' notice, you may forfeit the $50 exam fee.
All exams are computerized. Results are displayed immediately upon submission. If you pass at the Frankfort location, you will receive a printed license certificate on the day of your exam. At all other locations, log into your eServices account to print your license certificate and pocket ID card.
How to Prepare Effectively
The most effective preparation combines thorough coverage of all content areas and deliberate practice with exam-format questions. Your JustInsurance prelicensing course covers all required content for your line of authority, and the built-in practice questions mirror the knowledge areas tested on the KDOI exam.
Do not underestimate the Kentucky-specific content. State law questions — covering topics like the Motor Vehicle Reparations Act, workers' compensation under KRS Chapter 342, the Annuity Best Interest standard under 806 KAR 12:120, and the structure of Kentucky's health insurance marketplace through kynect — are tested alongside general insurance principles. Take full-length practice exams under timed conditions before your test date, and review any material you marked uncertain before your exam appointment.
