If you're ready to start your insurance career in Louisiana — whether you're drawn to New Orleans' tourism and healthcare economy, Baton Rouge's energy corridor, or the broader Gulf South market — getting your Louisiana insurance license is your first step. The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) oversees all producer licensing in the state, and the process has a distinctive feature that sets Louisiana apart from most states: there is no required prelicensing education. That means you can move from zero to exam-ready on your own timeline. This guide walks you through every step so you know exactly what to expect.

Who Regulates Insurance Licensing in Louisiana?

The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) is your regulatory authority for all insurance producer licensing in the state. The LDI's Producer Licensing Division is located at P.O. Box 94214, Baton Rouge, LA 70804. Their main number is (225) 342-0860 and their toll-free line is (800) 259-5300. The official website is ldi.la.gov. Unlike states such as Wisconsin, Indiana, and Kentucky, Louisiana does not contract your licensing exam through the state regulator's own system — PSI Services LLC administers all Louisiana insurance licensing exams on the LDI's behalf.

Step 1: No Prelicensing Education Required — But Prepare Anyway

Louisiana is one of a relatively small number of states that does not mandate prelicensing education before sitting the licensing exam. You are not legally required to complete any coursework before scheduling your PSI exam. That said, the Louisiana insurance licensing exam is substantive and challenging. The state intentionally designs these exams to be difficult in order to protect consumers from underprepared agents. Candidates who walk in without preparation fail at a much higher rate than those who study.

JustInsurance offers Louisiana-approved exam preparation courses for all major lines of authority. While the coursework is not required, it is strongly recommended — and the investment in preparation typically pays for itself by helping you pass on the first attempt rather than paying repeat exam fees.

Step 2: Schedule Your Exam with PSI

Schedule your Louisiana insurance licensing exam online at test-takers.psiexams.com/ladi or by calling PSI at (855) 579-4644. Louisiana testing sites are available in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Metairie, Monroe, Pineville (Alexandria), and Shreveport. As of July 8, 2024, remote proctored exams are no longer offered — all Louisiana licensing exams are in-person only.

Exam fees vary by line of authority. Life exams and Health & Accident exams each cost $30. The combined Life, Health & Accident exam costs $53. Property & Casualty exams cost $53. Fees are paid at the time of reservation by credit card, debit card, voucher, or electronic check and are non-refundable. Report to the testing center 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time and bring a valid government-issued photo ID.

The passing score for all Louisiana insurance licensing exams is 70%. There is no limit on how many times you may retake an exam within a one-year period. You may reschedule 24 hours after a failed attempt. Exam fees must be paid again for each attempt.

Step 3: Complete Fingerprinting and Background Check

Louisiana requires electronic fingerprinting for all first-time resident producer applicants. Fingerprinting is done through IdentoGO (Idemia), which became the state's contracted fingerprinting vendor effective March 1, 2024. Schedule your fingerprinting appointment at identogo.com using service code 27N339. The fingerprinting fee is $60.75. Your prints are transmitted electronically to the Louisiana State Police and the FBI, who forward background check results to the LDI within approximately three business days.

Note that fingerprinting can be completed at a PSI testing site on the day of your exam during regular testing hours, which allows you to handle both steps in a single visit.

Step 4: Submit Your License Application via NIPR

After passing your exam and completing fingerprinting, apply for your Louisiana resident producer license through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at nipr.com. The application fee is $55 flat — this covers all lines of authority you include in a single application — plus a $5.60 NIPR transaction fee. This is one of the more favorable application fee structures in the region: if you are applying for multiple lines, you pay only one $55 application fee rather than a per-line fee.

Step 5: Receive Your License

Once the LDI reviews your application, exam scores, and background check results, your license is issued. LDI receives test scores from PSI within one to two business days after you pass. Check your application status through your Industry Access account at ldi.la.gov.
