Louisiana Insurance License Requirements: The Complete Breakdown for 2025
Louisiana Insurance License Requirements: 2025 Guide. Practical Louisiana insurance guide for new and experienced agents. Get the rules, timelines, and...

If you're researching what it takes to get a Louisiana insurance license — whether you're a career changer, a recent graduate, or a producer relocating from another state — this guide gives you the complete picture. Louisiana's licensing requirements are distinctive in several ways that set it apart from most comparison states, starting with the absence of a prelicensing education mandate and extending through a fingerprinting requirement, a flat application fee structure, and specialty training obligations that apply once you're licensed and selling. Here is everything you need to know.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a Louisiana resident insurance producer license, you must be at least 18 years old, be a Louisiana resident, and have a valid Social Security Number. You must be able to truthfully answer the background disclosure questions on the NIPR application. Background disclosures do not automatically disqualify you — the LDI evaluates them individually — but they do require supporting documentation and additional review time. Contact the LDI Producer Licensing Division at (225) 342-0860 before applying if you have prior convictions.
No Prelicensing Education Requirement
Louisiana is one of a small group of states — Missouri is another comparison state in this category — that does not require prelicensing education before sitting the licensing exam. There is no mandatory 20-hour or 40-hour course requirement like those in Kentucky, Indiana, or Wisconsin. You may schedule your PSI exam at any time without completing any coursework.
This does not mean preparation is unnecessary. The Louisiana insurance licensing exam tests both general insurance knowledge and Louisiana-specific laws, regulations, and ethics. Candidates who study pass at significantly higher rates. JustInsurance offers Louisiana-approved exam prep courses specifically designed around the content areas tested on the PSI exam.
Examination Requirements
Louisiana's licensing exams are administered by PSI Services LLC at testing centers in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Metairie, Monroe, Pineville (Alexandria), and Shreveport. All exams are in-person — remote testing was eliminated effective July 8, 2024. The passing score for all exams is 70%. There is no limit on retakes within a one-year period, and you may reschedule 24 hours after a failed attempt.
Exam fees by line: Life = $30, Health & Accident = $30, combined Life/Health/Accident = $53, Property & Casualty = $53. The P&C exam is 150 questions with 160 minutes. The Life exam is 100 questions with 2 hours. Each exam fee must be paid again for each attempt.
Fingerprinting and Background Check
Louisiana requires electronic fingerprinting for all first-time resident producer applicants. The vendor is IdentoGO (Idemia), effective March 1, 2024, using service code 27N339. The fee is $60.75. Results are sent to the Louisiana State Police, the FBI, and then forwarded to the LDI within approximately three business days. Fingerprinting can be done at a PSI testing site on the day of your exam, which allows you to combine both steps efficiently.
Application and License Issuance
Apply through NIPR at nipr.com after passing your exam and completing fingerprinting. The application fee is $55 flat (all lines of authority in one application) plus a $5.60 NIPR transaction fee. A 60-day temporary Life license is available by email request to ProducerLicensing@ldi.la.gov. No temporary license is available for Property & Casualty.
Continuing Education Requirements
Once licensed, all Louisiana resident producers must complete 24 hours of approved CE every two years, including at least 3 hours of ethics. Beginning with renewals due on or after July 31, 2027, producers must include 2 hours dedicated to current Louisiana insurance law legislative updates as part of the 24-hour total, per Act 29 of the 2025 Regular Legislative Session.
Specialty Training Requirements
Louisiana requires additional pre-sale training for three key product areas. The Annuity Best Interest training (4-hour one-time) is required for all Life producers who sell annuities, effective September 20, 2024. LTC insurance requires an 8-hour initial course before first sale plus a 4-hour ongoing course every renewal period. NFIP flood insurance requires a 3-hour course completed every 2-year renewal period — notably, Louisiana's flood requirement is ongoing rather than one-time, which differs from some comparison states. Pet insurance training is required before selling any pet insurance product, per LA Act 94 effective January 1, 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Louisiana require prelicensing education? No. Louisiana does not mandate prelicensing education before taking the insurance licensing exam. You may schedule your PSI exam without completing any coursework. However, preparation is strongly recommended — the exam is challenging by design and unprepared candidates fail at a significantly higher rate.
- How many times can I retake the Louisiana insurance exam if I fail? There is no limit on retakes within a one-year period. You may reschedule 24 hours after a failed attempt. Each retake requires paying the exam fee again. This unlimited retake policy is one of the more producer-friendly exam policies in the comparison group.
- Is fingerprinting required for Louisiana insurance producers? Yes. All first-time resident producer applicants must complete electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGO using service code 27N339. The fee is $60.75. This can be done at a PSI testing site on the day of your licensing exam.
- What is the NFIP flood training requirement in Louisiana? Louisiana requires P&C and Personal Lines producers to complete a 3-hour NFIP flood insurance certification training course as part of each 2-year licensing period. This is an ongoing renewal requirement — not a one-time obligation — which is particularly important given Louisiana's significant flood exposure.
- What is the pet insurance training requirement? Effective January 1, 2024, under LA Act 94, producers must complete training provided by the insurer before selling pet insurance products. A producer who completed a similar pet insurance training requirement in another state satisfies the Louisiana requirement.
