If you're preparing to sit the Louisiana insurance licensing exam — or you're trying to understand what you're getting into before you commit — this guide covers everything. Louisiana uses PSI Services LLC to administer all producer licensing exams, the exams are in-person only, and the passing score is 70%. What makes Louisiana distinctive is that there is no required prelicensing coursework standing between you and your exam date. You can schedule your PSI exam as soon as you feel ready. The challenge is making sure that readiness is real. Here is exactly what the exam looks like, how it works, and how to approach it strategically.

Who Administers the Louisiana Insurance Exam?

PSI Services LLC administers all Louisiana Department of Insurance producer licensing exams. Schedule online at test-takers.psiexams.com/ladi or by calling PSI at (855) 579-4644. Louisiana testing centers are in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Metairie, Monroe, Pineville (Alexandria), and Shreveport. As of July 8, 2024, the LDI eliminated remote proctored exam options — all exams are in-person only. This aligns Louisiana with Missouri and Kentucky, which also eliminated remote options in recent years.

Passing Score and Retake Policy

The passing score for all Louisiana insurance licensing exams is 70%. All exams are computerized and scored immediately upon completion — you receive your score report before leaving the testing center. There is no limit on how many times you may retake a failed exam within a one-year period, and you may reschedule 24 hours after a failed attempt. Each retake requires paying the exam fee again. If your exam authorization expires at the end of the one-year period, you must reapply.

This unlimited retake policy is among the most producer-friendly in the comparison group. Missouri also offers unlimited retakes. Indiana limits retakes to unlimited within a score validity period. Wisconsin has no retake waiting period. Kentucky limits candidates to three attempts within 120 days.

Exam Format and Content Areas

Each Louisiana insurance licensing exam covers two broad content areas: a general section and a state-specific section. The general section tests foundational insurance knowledge — product types, policy provisions, coverage structures, and principles that apply across all states. The state section tests Louisiana-specific insurance laws, regulations, ethics, and practices — content that varies significantly from state to state and that is not covered by generic study materials.

For the Life exam, general content includes types of life insurance (term, whole, universal, variable), policy provisions, beneficiary designations, annuity structures, and group versus individual coverage. Louisiana-specific content covers the LDI's producer licensing framework, the Louisiana Insurance Code (Title 22), unfair trade practices, the Annuity Best Interest standard effective September 20, 2024, and producer conduct obligations.

For the Property & Casualty exam, general content includes homeowners policies, commercial property basics, auto insurance coverage structures, and liability concepts. Louisiana-specific content covers Louisiana's auto insurance minimum requirements (15/30/25), the modified comparative fault system effective January 1, 2026 (Act 15), the No Pay No Play statute, workers' compensation under the Louisiana Workers' Compensation Act, and the LDI's market conduct and producer conduct framework.

What Test Day Looks Like

Report to the PSI testing center 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — the name on your ID must exactly match the name on your PSI registration. If you arrive late, you may be denied entry and forfeit your exam fee. You will be photographed and asked to complete sign-in procedures. Fingerprinting is available at PSI sites during regular testing hours if you have not yet completed it.

The exam appears on your assigned computer. Before beginning, you have the opportunity to take a short computer tutorial. All questions are multiple choice with four options. The exam allows you to skip questions, change answers, and mark questions for later review — use these features strategically. Your score is displayed immediately upon submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many questions are on the Louisiana P&C insurance exam? The Louisiana P&C exam has 150 scored questions plus a small number of unscored experimental questions (5 to 10) that do not count toward your score but do count against your time. You have 160 minutes to complete the exam. The Life exam has 100 questions and 120 minutes.
  • Can I take the Louisiana insurance exam online from home? No. As of July 8, 2024, Louisiana eliminated remote proctored exam options. All licensing exams must be taken in person at a PSI testing center.
  • What happens if I fail the Louisiana insurance exam? You may reschedule 24 hours after a failed attempt. There is no limit on the number of retakes within a one-year period. Each retake requires paying the exam fee again. Contact PSI at (855) 579-4644 to reschedule or visit test-takers.psiexams.com/ladi.
  • Is the national and state content on the Louisiana exam scored separately? No. Louisiana administers an integrated exam for each line of authority with a single overall score. The name on your ID must exactly match the name on your PSI exam registration. A second form of ID may also be requested.
