Getting your South Carolina insurance license opens doors to one of the most distinctive insurance markets in the Southeast. Charleston's coastal markets, Greenville's manufacturing economy, the substantial retiree migration to Hilton Head and the coast, and the state's favorable tax environment for both producers and clients create real opportunity for licensed agents. South Carolina's licensing process is straightforward — and notably, the state does NOT require pre-licensing education, making it one of the more accessible licensing paths in the country.

Here's exactly how to get your South Carolina insurance license.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements

Before starting, confirm you meet South Carolina's baseline requirements:

You must be at least 18 years old

You must have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)

You must be eligible to be licensed (not currently holding an active equivalent SC license, not holding active resident license in another state)

You must be able to pass a state and federal criminal history background check

You must truthfully complete the license application and disclose any relevant history

These eligibility requirements are governed under Title 38, Chapter 43 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, which defines the regulations and requirements for insurance producers in South Carolina.

Step 2: Pre-Licensing Education (Optional in South Carolina)

Here's where South Carolina is distinctive: pre-licensing education is NOT required for insurance producer licensure in South Carolina. South Carolina is one of the few states that doesn't mandate prelicense education before sitting for the licensing exam.

However, prelicense education is strongly recommended. Here's why:

The South Carolina state exam covers substantial content

The exam covers both general insurance topics and South Carolina-specific laws

Most candidates significantly improve their pass rate by completing structured study

Quality prelicense courses include practice exams that mirror the actual state exam

So while you can technically skip prelicense and go straight to the exam, doing so reduces your chances of passing on the first try. Most successful candidates complete a prelicense course even though it's not legally required.

Step 3: Schedule Your State Exam Through Pearson VUE

South Carolina insurance licensing exams are administered by Pearson VUE. Pearson VUE became the SC exam vendor in 2023, replacing the previous vendor. To schedule:

Register through Pearson VUE's website or by phone at 877-759-5226

Pay the $59 exam fee at registration

Schedule at a Pearson VUE testing center or take it through OnVUE remote testing

Bring two valid forms of identification on test day

South Carolina Exam Structure

South Carolina offers exams for various lines of authority:

Question counts and time limits vary by exam. Verify current specifications through Pearson VUE before your exam.

Passing score: 70% on every South Carolina insurance license exam.

Exam reports expire 12 months after the date of issuance. You must apply for licensure within this window after passing your exam.

The exam covers two sections: General (insurance principles applicable in any state) and State Law (South Carolina-specific laws, rules, and regulations).

Step 4: Submit Your License Application

After passing the state exam, apply for your license:

South Carolina license applications are submitted electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) at nipr.com.

Application requirements:

Confirmation of exam completion (reported electronically by Pearson VUE)

Disclosure of any criminal history, regulatory actions, or bankruptcies

Application fee payment

State application fee: $25 (per line of authority — non-prorated, non-refundable, non-transferable)

Important: If you've passed the licensing exams for multiple lines of authority, you'll be required to submit an application (and pay a filing fee) for each of these.

You can submit your application as early as 2 days after passing your South Carolina licensing exam. You should receive a confirmation email from the South Carolina Department of Insurance within one business day of submitting your application.

Answer all disclosure questions honestly. South Carolina cross-references your answers against background check results.

Step 5: Submit Your Fingerprints for Background Check

This is South Carolina's distinctive licensing step. All resident producer applicants must submit fingerprints as part of the licensing process (effective January 2017).

Fingerprinting process:

After submitting your application through NIPR, you'll receive an email from the SCDOI with instructions on scheduling your fingerprint appointment.

Fingerprinting is conducted through IdentoGO:

Schedule online at IdentoGO's website

Use service code: SC920124Z - DOI SC Producer Licensing/Renewal

Fingerprinting fee: $51.75

Allow time for processing

What fingerprinting accomplishes:

Fingerprinting allows the SCDOI to complete:

A statewide criminal background check with SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division)

A national criminal background check with the FBI

Important: Once fingerprint records are on file, new criminal charges for licensed insurance producers are automatically reported to the SCDOI.

One-time fingerprinting: Once successfully submitted and processed, you do not need to be re-fingerprinted with future license renewals as long as your license remains active.

Recent process changes (effective August 22, 2024): South Carolina updated its fingerprinting process including changes to when fingerprint forms and applications must be submitted. Companies cannot save and reuse ORI numbers/service codes, and any public information containing fingerprint instructions must be removed.

Step 6: SCDOI Reviews and Issues Your License

Once the SCDOI has your complete application, exam results, and fingerprint background check, processing typically takes:

Clean applications: typically a few business days after fingerprinting completes

Applications with disclosures: longer depending on complexity

You'll receive notification when your license is issued. Once approved, you'll receive a link to print or download your license.

Step 7: Get Appointed by Insurance Carriers

South Carolina requires producers to be appointed by carriers to sell their products. Most carriers handle the appointment process once you've contracted with them. Appointments are typically processed within a few business days, with no additional exam required.

Total Timeline

From starting study to holding your active South Carolina license, most candidates finish in 2-4 weeks. Without required prelicense education, the timeline can be even faster:

Self-study (recommended even though not required): 1-3 weeks

Exam scheduling and completion: 1 week

Application submission and fingerprinting: 1-2 weeks

License processing: a few business days after fingerprinting

The fingerprinting step adds time compared to non-fingerprinting states, but the overall timeline is competitive.

Special Path: Moving to South Carolina From Another State

If you're already licensed as an insurance producer in another state and you move to South Carolina:

Step 1: Pass the South Carolina state licensing exam — UNLESS you submit your application within 90 days of canceling your previous resident license, in which case the state exam is exempt.

Step 2: Cancel the license in your previous home state.

Step 3: Apply online at NIPR with the $25 license fee.

Step 4: Upon receipt of the application on the next business day, the Department will send an email with instructions on scheduling the fingerprint appointment.

A letter of clearance from the home state is not required if SCDOI can verify on the State Producer Licensing Database (SPLD) that the license has been canceled in the previous home state.

This streamlined path saves significant time for already-licensed producers relocating to South Carolina who act within the 90-day window.
