How to Get Your Alabama Insurance Producer License
Alabama Insurance Producer License Guide. Practical Alabama insurance guide for new and experienced agents. Get the rules, timelines, and steps you need.

Getting your Alabama insurance producer license opens the door to one of the Southeast's steady insurance markets. The Alabama Department of Insurance (ALDOI) has a clear licensing process — and thanks to recent regulatory changes, it's now one of the more streamlined paths in the country.
Here's exactly how to get your Alabama insurance producer license.
Step 1: Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements
Before starting, confirm you meet Alabama's baseline requirements:
You must be at least 18 years old
You must be an Alabama resident, or qualify for a non-resident license
You must be able to pass a fingerprint-based background check
You must truthfully complete the license application and disclose any relevant history
There's no degree requirement, no prior insurance experience needed.
Step 2: Prelicense Education Is No Longer Required
This is important and different from most states: Effective January 1, 2024 (under Alabama Act No. 2023-104), Alabama no longer requires prelicense education for insurance license applicants.
That said, prelicense education is still highly recommended because:
Alabama's exams are challenging without structured preparation
Pass rates are significantly higher for candidates who complete prelicense courses
Understanding content thoroughly helps your actual career, not just passing the exam
Most candidates still complete a prelicense course — they just aren't required to by state law.
Step 3: Register for and Pass the State Exam
Alabama's insurance licensing exams are administered through The University of Alabama (this is unique to Alabama — most states use Pearson VUE or PSI).
Register at training.ua.edu/insurance-testing
Call (205) 348-3000 or email insurance@ua.edu for support
Schedule at least 7 days (5 business days) before your desired exam date
Pay the exam fee at registration by credit or debit card
Remote online testing may be available for certain exams.
Exam Formats by License Type
Life Insurance: 125 questions, 2 hours 30 minutes
Health Insurance: 100 questions, 2 hours
Combined Life & Health: 150 questions, 3 hours
Property Insurance: 100 questions, 2 hours
Casualty/P&C combined exams: varies
Passing score: 70% on every exam.
Your examination is graded immediately upon submission. If you pass, you receive a passing certificate. Your passing results are electronically reported to the ALDOI within 3-5 days.
Step 4: Complete Fingerprinting and Background Check
All Alabama individual resident applicants must complete a fingerprint-based background check.
Important timing: Alabama recommends getting fingerprinted after passing the exam and one day before applying for the license.
Why? Fingerprints only remain in the ALDOI system for 30 days after being taken. If you get fingerprinted too early and delay applying, you'll have to get re-fingerprinted.
Fingerprints completed for any reason outside pursuing an Alabama insurance license won't be accepted. You need insurance-specific fingerprinting through the ALDOI's designated vendor.
Step 5: Submit Your License Application
Alabama license applications are typically submitted through:
NIPR (National Insurance Producer Registry) at nipr.com
SBS (State Based Systems) for certain license types
Your application includes:
Confirmation of exam completion (reported electronically from the University of Alabama)
Background check clearance via fingerprinting
Disclosure of any criminal history, regulatory actions, or bankruptcies
Application fee payment
Answer disclosure questions honestly. The ALDOI cross-references against background check results.
Your passing exam certificate is valid for one year — you must file your online license application within that window.
Step 6: ALDOI Reviews and Issues Your License
Once the ALDOI has your complete application, exam results, and background check, they review everything together.
After 5 days from submitting the application, you can check aldoi.gov and go to License Search under Producers/Agents to confirm issuance.
Once issued, you can print your license directly from the ALDOI website.
Step 7: Get Appointed by Insurance Carriers
Your Alabama producer license authorizes you to be licensed, but you need appointments with insurance carriers before you can sell their products. Carriers typically handle the appointment process once you've contracted with them.
Total Timeline
From starting exam preparation to holding your active license, most Alabama candidates finish in 3 to 8 weeks. Without mandatory prelicense requirements, Alabama is one of the faster licensing paths in the country.

5 Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I really not need prelicense education in Alabama? Correct — as of January 1, 2024, Alabama no longer requires prelicense education (per Alabama Act No. 2023-104). However, prelicense courses are still highly recommended because Alabama's exams are challenging without structured preparation.
- Why does Alabama use the University of Alabama for exams? Alabama partners with the University of Alabama to administer insurance licensing exams rather than using private testing providers. It's a long-standing arrangement unique to Alabama.
- What happens if I fail the Alabama state exam? You can retake it. Alabama allows multiple retake attempts, though each requires new registration and fee payment. Review your score report to focus your preparation on weak areas.
- How long is my Alabama license valid? Alabama producer licenses renew every 2 years on a biennial cycle tied to your birth month and birth year (odd/even).
- Does my Alabama passing exam score expire? Yes. You must file your license application within 1 year of your exam date. Otherwise, you'll need to retake the exam.
