Indiana Insurance CE Requirements: Complete Guide
Indiana Insurance CE Requirements Guide. Practical Indiana insurance guide for new and experienced agents. Get the rules, timelines, and steps you need.

Indiana's CE framework requires 24 hours every 2 years with 3 mandatory Ethics hours — the same core structure as Ohio, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Maryland. Indiana's distinctive CE features include: the 2-hour professional organization participation credit (IC 27-1-15.7-2.4, added by HEA 1329, 2023 — active participation in state or national professional insurance organizations counts up to 2 hours toward CE); the July 1, 2024 Annuity Best Interest training (760 IAC 1-72-4.5 — 4-hour one-time course for life line producers before selling annuities); and the $160 late renewal fee (4x the $40 renewal — strongest financial incentive for timely renewal among comparison states). CE is tracked in Sircon or NIPR, with certificates retained for audit purposes. Here's the complete guide.
The Basic Framework
Under Indiana Code Chapter 27-1-15.7:
24 hours of CE every 2 years
3 hours Ethics mandatory
CE tracked in Sircon or NIPR database
Certificates retained as proof of completion for audits
CE must be completed before submitting renewal application
Renewal: every 2 years; last day of birth month
Professional organization participation credit (IC 27-1-15.7-2.4; HEA 1329, 2023): An Indiana producer who actively participates in a state or national professional insurance organization may receive up to 2 hours CE credit per 2-year period — applied by the Commissioner. Qualifying participation includes:
Participating member of the organization's Board of Directors
Other active participation as defined by IDOI
How to claim: Attach a signed and dated letter from the organization's designee identifying the producer, specific committee, and certifying active participation.
Important: This is 2 hours of the 24-hour total — not in addition to 24 hours. Producers who have 22 hours of regular CE and 2 hours of professional org credit meet the full 24-hour requirement.
Specialty Training Requirements
Annuity Best Interest Training (760 IAC 1-72-4.5; eff. July 1, 2024):
One-time 4-hour IDOI-approved course before selling annuities
Life line producers who obtained the line before July 1, 2024: must complete within 6 months of July 1, 2024
Life line producers who obtain the line after July 1, 2024: must complete within 6 months of obtaining the line

Submit renewal through Sircon or NIPR

Indiana CE vs. Comparison States
5 Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Indiana's professional organization CE credit and how does it work? IC 27-1-15.7-2.4 (added by HEA 1329, 2023) allows the Commissioner to apply up to 2 hours of CE credit per 2-year period for producers who actively participate in state or national professional insurance organizations — including service on a Board of Directors or in other active roles. To claim: provide a signed, dated letter from the organization's designee confirming the producer's participation, specific committee, and active status. Contact IDOI at [email protected] for current claim procedures.
- Does the Annuity Best Interest training count toward CE? Yes — the 4-hour Annuity Best Interest training course (760 IAC 1-72-4.5) counts toward the 24-hour CE requirement in the renewal cycle completed. For a life producer completing the training in the first renewal period after July 1, 2024: the 4 hours of annuity training + 3 hours of Ethics + 17 additional hours = 24 hours total.
- How does Indiana's $160 late renewal fee compare to other states? Indiana's $160 late renewal fee is 4x the standard $40 renewal — one of the most significant late renewal penalties among comparison states. Maryland's late renewal is $169 ($54 + $15 + $100 reinstatement); Colorado's is different; Minnesota's is $150 (within 1 year). Indiana's $160 creates the strongest financial incentive for timely renewal among comparison states.
- Is CE reported to Sircon or NIPR? Both Sircon and NIPR are used for Indiana CE tracking — the same platforms used for license applications and renewals. CE providers report completions to Sircon or NIPR, which IDOI accesses for CE compliance verification. Producers should verify their CE transcript in Sircon or NIPR before submitting renewal to confirm all hours are properly recorded.
- How does Indiana's CE structure compare to NJ or MN where any line counts? Indiana's CE requirements — verify current line-specific vs. general content requirements at in.gov/idoi or through IDOI's Education Coordinator (brwalters@idoi.in.gov). States like MN and NJ allow any approved course to count for non-Ethics CE; Indiana may have specific content requirements. Always verify current IDOI CE content requirements before enrolling.
